On the island of Despair

On the Island of Despair

Barren land for miles,
I start to lose hope,
Six others beside me,
Clinging on to life's thin rope.
Will anyone ever come?
To take us away from this island of despair?
Does anyone in this world,
know, love or even care?

The crashed copter,
No more than a hundred yards away,
we begin to scream and shout,
Our strengths begin to fray.
We soon realize,
we are the only populators of this land,
we are unaccompanied,
except for acres of white sand.

As we stand on a seashore,
I bend down and take a close look,
At the fine sand at my feet,
What I saw, I hoped I had not mistook.
A writhing fish,
lay at my feet,
Without water and only sand,
the end of its life, it would meet.

I watched and stared in horror,
It only took a glance,
to say for sure that the little creature,
against death, did not stand a chance.
Without thinking twice,
I picked up the wriggling mass
and set him in his aquatic home,
His life he could regain at last.

My recently done deed
made warmth flood my heart,
I felt a strong surge of courage,
It was time to make a new start.
Nightfall was creeping in,
I called on my six teammates,
it was time to play the game of survival,
With no arguments, no debates.

In the darkness, we schemed,
we were going to make it out
of this confining territory
without a yelp or a shout.
We worked long and hard,
we created a fire.
we grew it enormous,
Our chances of being saved looming higher.

The fire lasted,
through the night
and we soon spotted
a joyful sight
Circling above us in the air,
was a rescue team;
they had spotted our cry for help
our condition was not as bad as it had started to seem!

We were extracted
from that terrible location,
promising never to get into
such a situation.
But the thing that truly
saved our souls,
was the little sea-creature
showing us never to stray from our goals.

The little marine-dweller
gave me something to use as a rope,
to climb all the way up,
and that little something was nothing but hope.
